    The Vikings wasted an opportunity to take sole possession of first place in the NFC North on Sunday by losing at Tampa Bay. But that loss did little to dampen Minnesota's playoff hopes or enthusiasm.

    The Vikings (5-5) remain tied atop the NFC North with Chicago and Green Bay and will attempt to stay in that spot, or create a bit of separation, when they make another trip to Florida on Sunday to play the Jacksonville Jaguars.

    "It's a new season," Vikings quarterback Gus Frerotte said. "Everybody is 0-0 right now, and we're all tied and we all have six games to go. We've got to make the most of our opportunities. (The Jacksonville game) is a huge game for us. We have to go down, and we have to give it our best."

  • Vikings' Allen fined 25K, but not suspended (AP)
    Minnesota Vikings defensive end Jared Allen has been fined $25,000 for a recent spate of late hits, but he won't be suspended. He's not planning to reduce his aggressiveness, either. After his summons to NFL headquarters in New York on Tuesday, Allen returned to Winter Park to continue resting and rehabilitating his sprained right shoulder.

    Minnesota Vikings defensive end Jared Allen apparently has avoided a suspension for his helmet-to-helmet hit on Green Bay Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers.
